What to do with old electric lawn mower engine?

I have an electric lawn mower engine that I would like to use as an engine for a gokart. Is this possible? Can I connect to batteries?

You don't say whether this engine is from a corded or cordless lawn mower.

Obviously, corded mowers run off of 120VAC (in the US). These cannot easily be converted for battery operation. The cost of the inverter you would need would scuttle the whole project. It would have to have VVVF (variable voltage, variable frequency) characteristics.

If you have an engine from a cordless mower, then yes, you can probably use this for a go-kart. These engines are typically on the order of a few horsepower, and will run well with a heavy-duty battery. You need to find the voltage of the engine, as they are not all the same. Some of the premium ones today run off 24VDC. The controller, while not rudimentary, is realizable for a project as yours.
